Everything about creating groups, splitting bills, scanning receipts and settling up.
Creating and managing groups
How do I create a group?
Tap 'Split a bill', say what it is for -- a one-off, a flat, a trip -- give it a name, pick the currency everyone will settle in, and add the people by name. You can change all of it later, except the currency once expenses exist.
How do I invite people?
Open the group, go to Members, and create an invite link. Share it on WhatsApp or copy it. Links last 14 days and can be revoked from the same screen.
Can I add someone who is not on Splitly?
Yes. Add them by name and their expenses count straight away. When they join with an invite link, their account links to that name automatically.
How do I close or delete a group?
Group settings has both. Closing keeps everything but makes it read-only for members, and can be undone. Deleting removes every expense, receipt and balance for everyone and cannot be undone.
How do I leave a group?
Group settings, then Leave. You can only leave once your balance is settled, so nobody is left holding an unresolved amount. Group owners hand ownership over first.
Expenses and splitting
How do I add an expense?
Tap the plus button, type the amount, say what it was for, and confirm who paid. Everyone is included in the split by default, so most expenses take a few seconds.
How does splitting by item work?
Choose 'By item', add each line from the bill, and tap the people who shared it. Tax and service charge are then spread in proportion to what each person ordered, which is fairer than dividing them equally.
Why do the shares not divide evenly?
Because money does not divide evenly. ₹100 across three people is 33.34, 33.33 and 33.33. We distribute the remainder rather than dropping it, so the shares always add back to the exact bill.
Can I edit or delete an expense?
Yes. You can edit anything you added or paid for, and group admins can edit anything. Deleting asks for confirmation and recalculates everyone's balances.
Receipt scanning
How does receipt scanning work?
Photograph the bill and we send the image to a vision model that reads the merchant, date, line items, taxes and total. You then review every field before anything is saved.
Does it understand GST?
Yes. CGST, SGST and IGST are read as separate lines, and service charge is kept separate from tax because it is not one. We check the numbers reconcile and flag it when they do not.
What if it reads something wrong?
Every field is editable, and fields we were less sure of are highlighted. Nothing is saved as an expense until you confirm it.
Who can see my receipts?
Only people in that group. Receipt images are stored privately and served through links that expire after a few minutes.
Settling up
How does UPI settlement work?
We work out the fewest payments that clear the group, then generate a UPI deep link and QR with the amount already filled in. It opens in Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or any UPI app.
Why is my balance not cleared after I paid?
Opening a UPI app does not tell us whether the money arrived, so we do not guess. The balance clears when the person receiving it confirms, or when a payment provider confirms the transfer with a verified signature.
How does debt simplification work?
We add up what each person paid and what they owe, then match the largest debtor to the largest creditor until everyone is square. If you paid for the hotel and someone else paid for dinner, those cancel out instead of becoming two transfers.
Can I settle in cash?
Yes. Record it as cash and it clears the same way. If you are the one receiving the money, it clears immediately.
Currencies
How does currency conversion work?
Enter the expense in the currency you actually paid in. We convert it into the group currency for balances, and store the rate and the time it was fetched alongside the expense. The original amount is never overwritten.
Which rate is used?
The rate at the time the expense was added, cached for six hours. Editing an expense keeps its original rate unless you change the currency, which is what an accountant would expect.
Privacy, security and your data
What do you store about my payments?
Your UPI ID, if you choose to add one, so friends can pay you back. Never a UPI PIN, card number, CVV, OTP or bank password. We do not ask for them anywhere.
Can I export my data?
Yes, any group, as CSV or JSON, from group settings.
How do I delete my account?
Settings, then Delete account. Your profile and login are removed. Expenses you paid for stay in your friends' groups with your name replaced, so their balances remain correct. You cannot delete while you owe or are owed money.
Still stuck?
Email us at support@splitly.example and tell us what happened. If it involves a specific group, mention the group name — but never send us a password, a UPI PIN or a card number. We will never ask for them.
For anything about how we handle your data, see our privacy policy and security page.
Common questions
Is Splitly free?
Yes. Creating groups, adding expenses, scanning receipts, splitting bills and settling up are all free while we are building the product. If we ever add a paid tier, the core splitting and settling will stay free.
Do I need to download an app?
No. It runs in your browser and installs to your home screen if you want it there. On Android and iPhone you can add it from the browser menu and it opens like an app.
Can I use Splitly without creating an account?
You can start without one. Create a group, add expenses, scan a receipt and see who owes what with no signup at all. That group lives in the browser you made it in and expires after a week, so create an account when you want to keep it, use it on your phone, or share it properly with the others.
Can I split bills by item?
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons to use it. Assign each dish to whoever ate it, and the tax and service charge are shared in proportion to what each person ordered. You can also allocate them equally if the group prefers.
Can I use UPI?
Yes. When someone owes you, they get a UPI deep link and a QR with the amount already filled in, which opens in Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or any UPI app. A settlement is only marked paid when the person receiving the money confirms it, or when a payment provider confirms it with a verified signature.
Can I track foreign currencies?
Yes. Enter an expense in THB, AED, USD or any other supported currency. We keep the original amount exactly as it was paid, record the exchange rate used, and show the rupee equivalent. Balances settle in the group currency.
Can I scan receipts?
Yes. Photograph a bill and we extract the merchant, date, line items, CGST and SGST, service charge and total. Every field is editable and nothing is saved until you confirm it.
Can I use it outside India?
Yes. The interface is rupee-first because that is who we build for, but a group can use any supported currency, and expenses abroad work exactly the same way. UPI settlement is India-only, so for foreign settlements you record the payment manually.
Can I invite friends through WhatsApp?
Yes. Every invite generates a private link you can send on WhatsApp in one tap. Links expire, can be limited to a single use, and can be revoked at any time.
Can I export my expenses?
Yes. Any group can be exported as CSV or JSON, including every expense, each person's share, the exchange rates used, all settlements and the outstanding balances.
Can I use it for rent and bills every month?
Yes. Set up a recurring expense once and it adds itself on the day it is due, split however you chose. Rent on the 1st, the internet bill on the 8th. You can pause or remove a rule at any time, and past expenses are left alone.
Can I split with just one person, without a group?
Yes. A one-to-one split needs no group, and you get a running balance with that person that nets across everything else you share. If you owe them from a dinner and they owe you from a flat, those cancel out.
How does debt simplification work?
We add up what each person paid and what they owe, then work out the smallest set of payments that clears everyone. If you paid for the hotel and someone else paid for dinner, those cancel out rather than becoming two separate transfers.
